Zuke's mini natural products have been issued for recall. Find out why!

Another recall has occurred and this time it was from a natural treat brand which many pet owners hold to a high standard. Zuke's is a natural dog treat and chew company based out of Colorado, USA. Their recall demonstrates that any type of pet food or pet product is liable to a recall.

What was recalled?

On April 30, 2021, Zuke's - Natural Dog Treats & Chews issued a recall on a number of their Mini Naturals Products from retail shelves and inventories. This came as a surprise to many customers because to date Zuke’s has never had any recalled products. Furthermore, their Mini Mini Naturals Products are one of their top selling products. Below is a list of the recalled products:

Why were the products recalled?

At this time there is no official reason for the recall. Zuke's voluntarily recalled their products and had only this to state: “We have identified a product quality issue during recent production with instances where the natural preservation system may not be working as effectively as it should. While not a food safety issue, we are proactively and voluntarily removing Zuke’s Mini Naturals from sale because we want pet parents to continue to have the best experience with our products”.

While the Mini Naturals Products were recalled voluntarily, there have been a number of online complaints about the products over the past year. Many customers were finding that their Mini Naturals Products had molded well before the labeled expiration date.

Zuke's uses phosphoric acid, citric acid and tocopherols as preservatives for their products. In a dry product, this would normally suffice, but because the Mini Naturals Products contain 30% moisture, these preservatives may not have been strong enough to prevent fungal growth and spoilage.

What should I do if I have purchased recalled product?

Zuke’s has removed all product from retail shelves so customers cannot purchase any more of the recalled products. If you already have the recalled product at home, the best thing to do is just dispose of it. Zuke’s has also stated that they will issue refunds for customers who are not satisfied with their purchase. For additional information, you can contact Zuke’s by email or by calling 1-866-985-3364.

Take home message

This recent recall proves that any type of product can be recalled, even trusted natural products. Often it is at no fault of the company. Where it is important however, is how the company handles a recall. A good company has a plan in place in the event a recall occurs. It is best if they recall their products as fast as possible as well as having data on where all of the tainted inventory is. Companies also need to be transparent about the issues they are having with their specific product in order to win back customer trust.

The best thing to do is to be aware of product recalls. Recalls can either be found on the FDA website or you can also sign up for the Dog Food Advisor recall alert on their website.
